On a daily basis, Recruitment and Talent Coordinator, Katie Gascoyne, gets a lot of the same kind of career questions. One of the most frequently asked questions is, “What is the best way to get a job in the animation industry?” There is no one way to get into the industry, but attending industry events can certainly help.

“Networking at festivals and meet up events is the best way to be exposed to professional artists and recruiters in this industry. Making contacts, asking for advice, and generally getting to know who and what jobs are out there are really important steps to getting your first job in animation.

When applying, being able to say you’ve spoken to someone from that studio (or even better, the person who will be reading your application!) is a definite bonus, as we already know who you are.” - Katie

Everyone in this industry is friendly, approachable and wants to be here.

If you’re shy by nature and the word ‘networking’ drives fear into your core, you’re not alone.

But here’s the good news:

“Everyone in this industry is friendly, approachable and wants to be here. Anyone at a networking event, or on a stand at a festival, is there to talk and give you advice. Sometimes, all you will need to do is initiate the conversation, and they will take it from there. And in times of desperation: Fake it ‘til you make it!” - Katie

Feeling ready to take the animation world by storm? The next wave of festivals is coming in the Autumn. Watch out for the Blue Zoo stand at BFX in October!

Can’t wait until then? Keep an eye on the Access:VFX and Q-VFX Twitters. Also follow BYOA and festivus Facebook groups for casual pub meetups and events. See you there!
