The most common route is by going to University to study an animated related degree, but it is by no means the only one. Many studios offer Internship placements and Apprenticeships and entry-level Runner positions.

Employability all comes down to your showreel, and University is a great way of creating a job-worthy showreel. But there are other routes, such as colleges where you can study Animation, Games & VFX, such as the NextGen Skills Academy courses at colleges across the UK. These can then lead on to Apprenticeships or online learning schemes such as AnimDojo.

There are many different roles in an animation studio, from visual creatives to IT, management and accounts. Each role requires different skills, but all require good communication, team skills and attention to detail.

Check out our job vacancies website to see what roles we have open.

At the moment we only offer Summer Internship placements for University Undergraduates (we open the application process on our jobs website at Easter time) but we hope to have a work experience programme in place soon, but places will be limited.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of applications, we are unable to give details feedback. Instead, we tour many Universities, colleges and festivals to give personal feedback to animators and artists. Face-to-face networking is one of the most important things you can do to get into the industry (as well as a great showreel!).

There are many amazing free programs you can download and use:
Blender for 3D animation, FX & compositing
Sculptris for 3D modelling/sculpting with "digital clay"

For practising animation skills, a simple 2D program like Animatic for iPad is a great way to build core skills.
